Weekly Geeks 19

I'm kinda doing the second part.

Again with Memorial Day Weekend here in the U.S. starting traditionally on Friday evening, it also is unofficially the start of summer. You've probably been asked this in other meme groups in which you participate, but do your reading habits change over the summer? Do you choose lighter fare? What do you enjoy to take to the beach, for example? What is the ultimate summer book? OR what are your favorite travel guides -- official or unofficial guides? Again, an example, I think of Holidays In Hell by P.J. O'Rourke, of places I'd rather not vacation. Along those lines, where do you vacation? Any places you recommend or even don't recommend?

First off, I've never figured out what a "beach read" is supposed to be. Do people read at the beach? I mean, though i haven't been to the beach since...um...2001 i think? i would never ever sit there and do nothing! It confuses me. If you have kids, why aren't you playing with them? if you're with friends or a partner, why aren't you swimming? Why would you want to read at the beach? There's sun and water and sand and, um, water! grab a float and go lay in the water! You can read at night or on the day it rains! You've driven or flown hundreds of miles. Be there!

Secondly, i don't go on vacation anymore. I don't have someone to go with and going to visit my family isn't a vacation. it's just a visit home. When i did go on vacation, i was too busy doing stuff to read. When i went to Portland i tried to read on the plane there but didn't do too well. I did read the travel guide to Oregon while we were there. As for travel books in general, i like the Lonely Planet ones. They are fun to read. I haven't read a bunch of travel writing but Bill Bryson has been interesting.

Thirdly, I would say my reading doesn't change at all with the seasons. Should i not want to read British classics because it's hot? Should i switch to more nonfiction on global warming? My TBR pile will have the same books in it now as it will in September, though i am guessing i'll add a few more in. So I'm going to be working on the same stuff anyway. I will fully admit to wishing there was another Harry Potter coming out this summer. that became such a big event of the summers it came out. At least we've got the movie coming out!

Maybe i'm just cantankerous today. I'm bleh and ookie and i feel bad cause i yelled at the dog. I'm tired but not sleepy. It's been threatening to storm all weekend so i didn't go hiking but it never did rain so that sucked. I had a shitty day at work yesterday and want to quit. Seriously. Too bad i guess.

Currently: in the middle of the Deadliest Catch marathon.
