Must Read?

What one literary work must you read before you die?
Hmm. Of the books I personally already own, I'd say The Wind Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami. I've loved his books so far and would be disappointed if i never read another.
As for books I don't own...wow. All of Tolstoy? All of Dickens? Dostoevsky? I haven't finished all the Bronte books! I haven't read Emma! Homer! that isn't even counting the modern people i haven't read! Toni Morrison! Salman Rushdie! Sarah Waters! Margaret Atwood! Franzen! why am i on the internet right nowihavetogoread!
Reading all the Dickens novels in order was one of the great reading experiences of my life so far-fun post-with the utmost deference

Great answer full of the existential angst of the lit Blogger, brimming with the contradictory impulses to turn the page of yet another life sparking between the hardboard covers of a book, or to follow the moral imperative to proselytize the latest greatest work like some mendicant preacher........... or go naaah I'm going on FBOOK.
ReplyDeleteMel U- I've read A Tale of Two Cities and didn't particularly care for it. Other than that I read Oliver Twist a long time ago (don't remember much) and A Christmas Carol, which i love!
ReplyDeleteParrish Lantern-great name! Facebook is a terrible time suck; i sometimes think i should just clear out of it completely!
Last year I would have said 'Les Miserables' but I got up the courage and gave it a go, so have ticked that one off. One book I've had at the back of my mind is 'Moby Dick' - not sure why really - but would like to read it before I kick the bucket I guess.
ReplyDeleteI agree about Facebook...now I've discovered Blogger and the wonders of writing randomly about my life, FB is just a bit of a bore. If you want to check out my randomness feel free;

I love reading anything by Murakami. But there's still a few I need to get around to reading.
ReplyDeleteHa ha! Funny. You and me both. And I dare say I have a lot less time than you!
